Borrow x Lend

Qual é a diferença entre borrow e lend? O que muda de um para o outro é o sentido do objeto sendo emprestado.

O borrow é usado para pegar emprestado:

John borrowed my book yesterday. (John pegou meu livro emprestado ontem.)
I borrowed this book from the library. (Eu peguei este livro emprestado da biblioteca.)
Can I borrow your pen? (Posso pegar a sua caneta emprestada.)


O lend é usado para emprestar, ceder algo a alguém:

My father lent me his car. (Meu pai me emprestou o carro dele)
I can lend some money if you need. (Eu posso lhe algum dinheiro se você precisar)
Can you lend me your pen? (Você pode me emprestar a sua caneta?)


É importante notar que normalmente o pedido com borrow vai ser can I borrow...? (posso eu pegar emprestado... ? e o pedido com lend vai ser can you lend me...? (pode você me emprestar...?).

O borrow é regular (borrow - borrowed - borrowed) e o lend é irregular (lend - lent - lent)

Despite and Inspite of

Despite e inspite of são tidos como sinônimos.

Despite

Despite means "even though," "notwithstanding," or "regardless of." It's the opposite of "because of/due to," and can be used with a noun or gerund.

In spite of

In spite of means exactly the same thing and is used exactly the same way as "despite."

Vegetables

Uma grande dificuldade que alunos iniciantes têm é pronunciar corretamente a palavra vegetables, ou comfortable. Nas duas, a terminação table tem a mesma pronúncia, algo como tbl. Assim, as palavras ficariam védjtbls e cônfrtbl respectivamente.
